Giveaway 29 Prototype of hard covered book
No need to mention last weeks winner here. She already contacted us :) BTW… I will be adding some pics of the finished designs of the 3X5 card binders. I am working on the product pages at this time and expect to have them done really soon. I wanted to do a lot of size comparisons for the three different styles and all the photography is what is taking so much time. But I hope to post a pic of the three different styles later this week and have all the product pages completed by next week.
Traditionally, when we think of a book, we think of it as either hard covered or paperback. Well, our version is a little non traditional. In the traditional sense, it has a front and rear hard cover. In the non traditional sense we sew the pages right into the spine. It is both decorative and functional. In fact, so functional that you can bend the book over on itself at the spine without doing any damage at all to the integrity of the book. This would break the spine of a traditionally bound book. But for ours books, it just adds to the usability of the book.
These books will lie completely flat from the first page to the last… no fighting to keep any of the pages down. This particular one which we are giving away has 144 pages of Rives lightweight paper. It is 100% cotton rag and a little on the raggy vs. smooth side. It is 115 gsm and about 90% opaque. We had some of this in the studio and so decided to use it for this prototype. The sheet size is a standard European A5 size and we added a strap to keep it closed.
We will be doing these in our colored leathers as they are fully leather lined. Just something else in the works at the Renaissance Art studio.
Remember that the winners need to contact us with their address and phone number in order to get their gift.

July 22nd, 2009 at 11:24 am
By the way, I can’t remember if I ever let you know how much I’ve enjoyed the book cover I ordered. It fit my Hebrew Bible like a glove and always invites complements/questions.

How can you part with these beauties?
July 22nd, 2009 at 11:42 am
Almost too nice to write in, but very very nice. The construction is intriguing as well. I seem to be more and more interested in bookbinding, and this pushing me to try it.
July 22nd, 2009 at 11:51 am
I’m a big fan of journals and feel that the journal itself contributes to the content. Writing in a good, soft leather journal will make you feel better than some cheap piece of cardboard that you have to battle with, and it will show in the things you write. Write in luxury, write luxurious thoughts.
July 22nd, 2009 at 11:52 am
Absolutely LOVE it! But then, I haven’t seen even one of your products that I didn’t. You guys are the best!
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:14 pm

July 22nd, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Thanks for the giveaway. Maybe I’ll win this time
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Very nice… me want..
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Handsome! And I would be remiss if I didn’t say “pen loop pen loop pen loop.” A5 and strap closure pretty much guarantees that the lucky recipient will be using this as some kind of portable journal or field book (I know that I certainly would.) Or if not a loop, then perhaps a strap of some kind to keep that precious writing instrument well-attached.
What would we see on the inside — contrasting leather, or perhaps the layer of hard-binding? The printing geek in me thinks that marbled paper would look fantastic on the inside, just like a “real” book.
Nice work!
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:28 pm
very excited about this
July 22nd, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Absolutely love the leather quality and the concept that the book can be opened to lie flat!

These are outstanding!
July 22nd, 2009 at 2:52 pm
That’s a great looking book.
July 22nd, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Please include me. A great journal, like a trusted friend, lasts through thick and thin, and the binding is of utmost importance…
July 22nd, 2009 at 3:09 pm
My daughter has been bugging me to start journaling again, so she will have my written thoughts to carry on after I’m gone (which is, hopefully, a ways down the road). I told her that I’d start writing again if she got me a really nice leather journal. This would be perfect and if I win you’d be saiving my daughter some money as well!
July 22nd, 2009 at 3:22 pm
This notebook looks really interesting.
July 22nd, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Ohdeargod that’s beautiful. I sincerely hope it’s mine…
July 22nd, 2009 at 3:27 pm
This looks really nice - this is basically an A5-sized journal with a rigid front and back cover, correct? (I’m trying to figure out the difference between this and your other journals)
Good luck everybody!
July 22nd, 2009 at 3:34 pm
so cool i would love to see it in person!!!! please count me in!
July 22nd, 2009 at 3:51 pm

July 22nd, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Very Handsome! You make the best looking leather journals I have ever seen. Can’t wait to order some.
July 22nd, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Another amazing prototype. I need to start writing more, this just might be the proper motivation,
July 22nd, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Oh man. My heart just went a-flutter!
Beautiful. Want!
July 22nd, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Looks beautiful. I would like one…
July 22nd, 2009 at 4:19 pm
This looks really rich and being able to fold it back on itself makes it highly useful for travel.
Did I miss a description of whether the paper was lined, and if so, how narrow or wide the lines and how dark the lines?
Having posted on the Fountain Pen Hospital website, I assume the paper is fountain pen friendly.
Add me to the list of people drooling over this one.
July 22nd, 2009 at 4:32 pm
I love being able to bend my journals back over themselves! And here I thought spiral bound was the only way to accomplish that…
July 22nd, 2009 at 4:39 pm
What a beautiful book!
July 22nd, 2009 at 5:16 pm
I *really* like this one. I’ve been eyeballing this site for quite some time now. Just going through all the moleskine journal styles and when I finally find the kind I like, I’m buying some leather covers for them.

Beautiful - I love the fact that it will lie flat when open. Perfect for family recipies!
July 23rd, 2009 at 7:11 am
I love that it bends all the way against itself, and that it lays flat . . . this surely makes for a very versatile book! Even if I don’t win, I will have my eye on this . . .
July 23rd, 2009 at 7:52 am
How I wish all master classic books would have this type of binding. Nice job in stiching the cover to the pages.
July 23rd, 2009 at 7:58 am
You guys just don’t quit with the great designs in wonderful materials! Here’s hoping this one finds a new home with me.

July 23rd, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Once again, absolutely beautiful.
July 23rd, 2009 at 2:17 pm
This new item of yours reminds me of the journal my Great-Aunt use to have when I was little. It is as beautiful as it is functional.
July 23rd, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Love it, and I think the design would look great in a smaller size, too, for a bit more portability.
July 23rd, 2009 at 4:02 pm

July 24th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Such beautiful work! Really lovely - - thanks for sharing your talents with the world!
July 24th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
This looks a lot like the custom leather cover you made for one of my books. Over years of use, the cover keeps getting better and better and still occasionally smells like the cow it came from! A book, not just a cover, is a bibliophile’s dream.
July 24th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
It looks really nice. It would be perfect for a field book.
July 24th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

July 25th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
I can picture this lying on my desk just waiting for my notes. Very impressive! The nicer the journal, the more organized I become! Thanks for helping out!

July 25th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
This sounds divine. The ability to open flat is one of the most important things to me in a journal, and it looks great.
July 25th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
very nice. I like it.
July 25th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

July 27th, 2009 at 7:16 am

I really like this book a lot. I love the idea that the covers are stiff, yet it lays flat and the spine is very flexible. Very nice, indeed.
July 27th, 2009 at 8:12 pm
I am in love with this book. I would give anything to hold it, and I would love to write my next book in here. Finally a journal that will stay open on its own!
July 28th, 2009 at 4:49 am

August 1st, 2009 at 8:11 pm
My husband and I decided to celebrate out first wedding anniversary (tomorrow) by compiling a commonplace book together! We already have stationary. Why not celebrate the traditional gift of paper by writing down our stories and celebrating our adventures in a beautiful book? Wouldn’t this be a handsome beginning to our second year of marriage? Lovely, beautiful, romantic book!
August 2nd, 2009 at 7:33 pm
Really nice looking book. I’d like to win one but if not, I will be watching for when it comes ‘officially’ out.
August 3rd, 2009 at 11:52 am
